Nikola Labs Brings Tesla’s Wireless Charging Tech into the 21st Century

11. 5. 2015 | Nikola Electronic R&D | www.nikolalabs.com

Nikola Labs spoke at the 2015 TechCrunch Disrupt conference about a new device they have created that “converts radio frequencies into DC power … and can power devices.” The prototype product is a case for an iPhone 6 which “converts” wasted energy from the phone into power. Since 90% of the energy of the iPhone 6 is spent in “trying to pump out a cellphone signal” this case can return up to 30% of the lost energy by removing it from the surrounding air.

This is accomplished by “harvesting back the ambient RF energy already being produced by the phone.”

These include WiFi, Bluetooth and LTE signals. Will Zell, co-founder of Nikola Labs, told the press : “We allow you to download power from the air. Our case is embedded with a harvesting antenna that is proprietary that captures wasted RF energy and then takes it through a conversion process to convert it into electricity, then dumps it back into the phone.”

Zell plans on their next product to be “a wireless charger that will provide near-field and far-field powering solutions to meet you as a consumer where you are, whether that’s at home or in your vehicle.”
